Who needs it

Anyone in Canada who wants to own or buy firearms needs a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) from the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program, applied for online or on paper.

How to apply

  1. Apply online or on the paper form after passing the firearms safety course. (RCMP: apply for a firearms licence)
  2. Use a photo 45 mm wide by 57 mm high, the head at least 30 mm, on a plain white or light background, less than 12 months old. (RCMP: photo requirements for a firearms licence)
  3. Online: a JPG or JPEG of 200 KB to 6 MB. On paper: write your name on the back, and your guarantor writes their full name and signs it. (RCMP: photo requirements for a firearms licence)

Printing the photos

One 6×4 inch print holds 3 photos of 45×57 mm: the 1 you need and 2 spare. Print at 100% scale, not fit to page.

How to take the Canada Firearms licence (PAL) photo on your phone

  1. Stand about an arm's length from a plain white or off-white wall, facing a window or other soft light, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you.
  2. Tilt clear glasses so they don't reflect the light, push your hair away from your eyes and eyebrows, and keep a neutral face with your mouth closed.
  3. Hold the phone at eye level, or ask someone to take it. Picproved's camera tells you when your head is straight, centred and the right size.
  4. Picproved crops the photo to 45×57 mm (531×673 pixels) with the head 30 to 36 mm tall, evens out the white background and checks every rule before you save.
  5. Save the file: it comes out 200 KB to 6 MB, ready to upload.
