Official rules: gov.uk. Rules checked on 26 October 2026.
You don't need a photo code
Applying online, you can take the photo using your own device during the application, with someone to help you, instead of entering a code from a photo booth or shop (GOV.UK: Get a passport photo). The code is only how GOV.UK collects a photo that a booth or shop took. GOV.UK says their photos are more likely to be approved, so check yours against the rules above before you use it. Passport photo code UK: do you need one?
For a baby, a booth rarely works: a child has to sit alone on the stool. GOV.UK says a baby under one should lie on a plain light-coloured sheet, photographed from above, and you can support their head as long as your hand doesn't show (GOV.UK: Get a passport photo).
How to take the United Kingdom Baby and child passport (online) photo on your phone
- Stand about an arm's length from a plain cream, light grey, off-white or white wall, facing a window or other soft light, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you.
- Tilt clear glasses so they don't reflect the light, push your hair away from your eyes and eyebrows, and keep a neutral face with your mouth closed.
- Hold the phone at eye level, or ask someone to take it. Picproved's camera tells you when your head is straight, centred and the right size.
- Picproved crops the photo to 35×45 mm (700×900 pixels) with the head 29 to 34 mm tall, evens out the cream background and checks every rule before you save.
- Save the file: it comes out 50 KB to 10 MB, ready to upload.
