Short answer: you can't amend a UK passport, so you apply for a new one in your new name: £102 online or £115.50 by post. Send the document that shows the change, such as your marriage certificate or a deed poll. You don't need a countersignature for a name change, and you'll get a new 10 year passport (GOV.UK: Change your name or personal details on your passport).
GOV.UK's name change pages checked on 3 November 2026. Fees and rules change, so check the linked GOV.UK page before you pay.

| Change | What to send |
|---|---|
| Marriage or civil partnership (including double-barrelled names) | Your marriage or civil partnership certificate (GOV.UK: Marriage or civil partnership change) |
| Before the wedding | You can apply up to 3 months before, with a "passports for newly weds" form signed by the minister or registrar. The new passport is post-dated, and can't be used before the ceremony (GOV.UK: Marriage or civil partnership change) |
| Divorce, or going back to a previous surname | Your birth certificate, a signed statement that you've gone back to that name "for all purposes", a document showing you use it, and the marriage certificate showing both names (GOV.UK: Divorce or returning to a previous surname) |
| Deed poll or any other change | The deed poll, statutory declaration or affidavit, proof of earlier name changes, and evidence you use the new name, such as a payslip (GOV.UK: Other name changes) |
| Small changes to forenames (Jane to Jayne, order, removing a middle name) | 2 documents showing you use the new name, such as a council letter, driving licence or bank statement (GOV.UK: Titles and small changes to forenames) |
| A child's name | A deed poll, evidence of the new name being used and written consent from everyone with parental responsibility (GOV.UK: Change the name on a child passport) |
Changing your name doesn't change the expiry date in your favour: time left on the old passport isn't added (GOV.UK: Change your name or personal details on your passport). If you hold another nationality's passport, it must show the same name first (GOV.UK: Change your name or personal details on your passport). You need a 1 week Fast Track appointment (£192) if you can't wait (GOV.UK: Get a passport urgently).
Marrying but keeping your name, changing address, a new title such as Dr, or a small change in appearance such as dyed hair or a beard (GOV.UK: Change your name or personal details on your passport).
A new passport always needs a new photo taken in the last month, even if you look the same (GOV.UK: Get a passport photo).
Or make it at home. Picproved costs £5.99 (free while we launch) for one person's photo in every size you need, and it checks the size, background, head size and face rules before you save. The office still makes the final decision. Make your United Kingdom Passport (online) photo
