How much does a passport photo cost in the UK?

About £10 in a self-service photo booth, from about £13 to £15 in a high-street shop where staff take the photo, or £16 on top of the passport fee if the Post Office takes the photo and sends your application. For an online application you can also take the photo yourself at home: Picproved costs £5.99 (free while we launch).

Prices are ranges from what UK photo booths, photo shops and the Post Office publish on their own websites, checked on 24 October 2026. They change, so check before you go. GOV.UK rules checked the same day.

Is taking it at home allowed?

Yes, for an online application. GOV.UK lets you take a digital photo on your own device, with someone to help you (GOV.UK: Get a passport photo). It also says a photo from a booth or shop is more likely to be approved than one taken on your own device, so check yours against the rules before you use it. For a paper form you need 2 identical printed photos, printed to a professional standard (GOV.UK: Printed photos): print a 6×4 sheet at a photo kiosk rather than at home.

Applying online also costs less: GOV.UK says it is £13.50 cheaper than applying by post (GOV.UK: Renew or replace your adult passport).

Or make it at home. Picproved costs £5.99 (free while we launch) for one person's photo in every size you need, and it checks the size, background, head size and face rules before you save. The office still makes the final decision. Make your United Kingdom Passport (online) photo
