Short answer: a 4×6 inch photo print holds two 2×2 inch passport photos side by side, and a new US passport (form DS-11) or a renewal by mail needs two identical photos. So one standard 4×6 print from a pharmacy, supermarket or photo counter gives you both. For an online renewal you upload the digital file instead, with no print at all.
State Department photo rules checked on 24 October 2026.
Step by step
Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall, in even daylight, with no glasses and a neutral face or natural smile (travel.state.gov: Passport photos).
Make it in Picproved as a US passport photo. It checks the head size, background, eyes and light, and never edits your face: the State Department refuses photos changed by filters or editing apps.
Save the 4×6 print sheet. It places two 2×2 inch photos at 300 DPI with cut marks.
Print it as an ordinary 4×6 photo at a photo counter or kiosk, on photo paper. Choose no borders and no cropping, so it prints at exactly 4×6.
Check the size with a ruler: each photo must measure 2 inches by 2 inches. Cut on the marks.
An example made with AI, not a real person: plain white background, head straight, neutral face, no glasses.
If the photo comes out the wrong size
The kiosk scaled it. Print it again and choose the actual-size or 4×6 option with no "fit to page" or crop, and print on photo paper rather than plain paper.
Or make it at home. Picproved costs $7.99 (free while we launch) for one person's photo in every size you need, and it checks the size, background, head size and face rules before you save. The office still makes the final decision. Make your United States Passport (print or online renewal) photo
Questions
How many passport photos fit on a 4×6 print?
Two 2×2 inch photos fit side by side on one 4×6 print, which is what a new US passport or a renewal by mail needs.
Can I print a passport photo at a pharmacy photo counter?
Yes. Any counter or kiosk that prints 4×6 photos from your phone can print the sheet. Ask for no borders and no cropping, then check each photo measures 2 by 2 inches.
Do I need prints for an online US passport renewal?
No. An online renewal takes the digital photo file. Prints are for a new passport, a child's passport or a renewal by mail.
Can someone take my US passport photo at home?
Yes, as long as it meets the rules: 2×2 inches, plain white or off-white background, taken in the last 6 months, no glasses and no filters or edits.
