Passport photo rejected for the background? How to fix it

Passport photo rejected for the background: how to fix it

What the rules say

UK photos need a plain, light-coloured background with no texture or pattern (GOV.UK: Rules for digital passport photos). U.S. photos need a plain white or off-white background (travel.state.gov: Passport photos).

How to fix it

  1. Stand in front of a plain, light wall or a white sheet, with nothing behind you.
  2. Check the colour your document asks for: the UK online service wants cream or light grey, the US wants white or off-white.

What Picproved checks

Picproved checks the background and can replace it with the colour your document needs. For documents where editing counts as alteration (US passports and visas), it keeps your own background and asks for a plain wall instead. For a UK passport applied for online it also starts with your own background, because GOV.UK asks for a photo "unaltered by computer software"; a new background is there if you turn it on. Your photo stays on your device.

Or make it at home. Picproved costs £5.99 (free while we launch) for one person's photo in every size you need, and it checks the size, background, head size and face rules before you save. The office still makes the final decision. Make your United Kingdom Passport (online) photo
