Passport photo rejected for closed eyes or hair? How to fix it

Passport photo rejected for closed eyes or hair: how to fix it

What the rules say

GOV.UK asks for your eyes open and visible, with no hair in front of them (GOV.UK: Rules for digital passport photos). The State Department asks for both eyes visible and open (U.S. Foreign Affairs Manual 8 FAM 402.1).

How to fix it

  1. Tuck hair behind your ears and push it off your forehead so your eyebrows show.
  2. Take a few photos and keep the one where your eyes are fully open.
  3. Babies under one don't need their eyes open for a UK passport; see the baby page below.

What Picproved checks

Picproved warns when the eyes look closed, when hair covers part of the face and when hair covers the forehead. Your photo stays on your device.

Or make it at home. Picproved costs £5.99 (free while we launch) for one person's photo in every size you need, and it checks the size, background, head size and face rules before you save. The office still makes the final decision. Make your United Kingdom Passport (online) photo
