For a UK passport online you can take the photo yourself: GOV.UK accepts a digital photo you or someone else takes, as long as it meets the rules (GOV.UK: Get a passport photo). For a paper form you need two printed photos (GOV.UK: Rules for printed photos). See Passport photo code UK: do you need one?

Questions

Does Asda do passport photos?
Yes. Max Spielmann runs photo booths in over 400 Asda stores: £10 for 4 printed passport photos with a digital code, but no staff check. Some larger Asda stores also have a staffed Max Spielmann shop, where UK passport photos start at £12.99 and visa photos at £14.99 (Asda Photo: Passport photos).
Does the Asda booth check my photo?
No. Asda says there are no colleagues at the booth to check that your photos meet HM Passport Office rules.
Can I take my own UK passport photo instead of going to Asda?
Yes, for an online application. GOV.UK lets you take a digital photo yourself or ask someone to take it, as long as it follows the photo rules. For a paper form you need printed photos, and GOV.UK says photos printed at home are unlikely to be good enough, so print at a photo kiosk or shop.
What is a digital photo code?
A code that a booth or shop gives you with your photos. You type it into the GOV.UK online application and your photo is added to it. If you take the photo on your own device during the application instead, you don't need a code.
